Jennifer
Fast conceived the idea for Birthday Buddies in May 2004.
While searching for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, she
was quickly overwhelmed by the great need of so many Winnipeg
residents. Where do you start…how do you really
make a difference?
Jennifer felt especially moved by the plight of so many children
struggling with the effects of domestic violence but wondered
how she could ever help all these families.
As
a World Vision sponsor, Jennifer had appreciated their concept
of "One Child at a Time", which had attracted her
initially to that program. Borrowing on this concept, Jennifer
was then able to envision helping ALL the children in Winnipeg’s
Second Stage Housing, "One child at a time…
one birthday at a time".
Suddenly the "impossible" seemed achievable!
Birthday
Buddies Inc. began operations in January 2005 and has since
expanded beyond Winnipeg to include three additional offices.
Cheryl Goossen is heading up operations in Brandon, Manitoba,
Margaret Scobie has opened up a Branch in Calgary, Alberta.
and Ginette Wainwright is working out of Edmonton, AB. This
fabulous team of volunteers are all busy Moms who have found
that being a part of The Birthday Buddies Program has been
a wonderful experience for the whole family. The Life Lessons
are very meaningful for their children who really enjoy helping
to prepare the Birthday Giftpacks.
